Simile
Author's Note

I wrote this poem while at theater school in a little farm house in southern Ontario. It had been a busy day but after everyone else had gone to bed I sat up alone to write in my journal of the days events. The house was dead quiet except for a ticking clock, and my thoughts. I put two and two together and came up with the idea for "Simile"

This poem was also later submitted to Brian McKinnon, although I had already graduated. I went back one day to visit him and tell how my summer at theater school had gone, and the first thing he wanted to know was whether I had written any new poems. That's just like him. I wrote out a memorized draft of "Simile" and gave it to him. He added it to his pile of poems and I later saw it published in "Awareness III", the school's anthology of student poetry and fiction.
